Because weight control is big business, countless numbers of bogus quick weight loss plans are available. Kay Stanfill, a registered dietician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, offers some advice on how to determine the truth about weight loss: Does the advertisement, clinic, or person claim or imply that the government or medical establishment is suppressing this health information? “The question to ask is can the group or person making this claim show legitimate credentials in the field of nutrition? People should verify that their doctor or other health specialist has training in nutrition and weight-loss counseling. Otherwise, its like letting your dentist deliver your baby.” Does the plan require that you do absolutely nothing? (Lose weight while you sleep, etc.) “Losing weight without any effort is a fantasy that we all share. But if a person is trying to be healthy, he or she will have to learn to change ingrained behaviors–namely eating and exercising habits.” Does the diet radically skew your eating habits, such as the “pineapple diet,” the “cottage cheese diet,” etc.? Diets which restrict a persons choices generally are doomed from the start. If adhered to for a long time, they cant provides sufficient nutrition. Also, “if a person restricts anything from his or her diet–you usually can bet that that will become his or her next |binge food. There is nothing like deprivation to make people crave a particular food.” Does the diet seem to go against all good sense, such as saying fat or calories dont count? This definitely is a warning signal of an unreliable diet. “However, we will soon have to revamp our thinking on this point when new fat substitutes come on the market in the next couple of years. Its quite possible that we will be able to eat, for example, french fries, made with a fat substitute which have only the calories of the potatoes.”

It is important to remember that losing weight too quickly puts you at risk for health problems such as gall stones, electrolyte imbalance, and lean-muscle loss. In fact, any weight loss can improve health for people who are obese. It is better to maintain a moderate weight loss over a prolonged period than to regain from a marked weight loss. A person who is obese and weighs 250 pounds might lose as much as 5 pounds in a week, which is about 2%. Someone who is overweight and weighs 200 pounds might lose as much as 2 pounds in one week, which is about 1%. The rate at which you lose weight declines over time because your body metabolism slows down with weight loss. Research shows that in a well-designed weight-loss program, it is generally achievable to lose weight by about 10% in six months. If this initial target is achieved, fuller weight loss can be considered. Diet and physical activity usually need to be revised in six months to continue to lose weight.

The California Association for HPERD believes adapted physical education is one of the program options available to students with disabilities who are eligible for special education. Direct service Adapted Physical Education is provided by a credentialed Adapted Physical Education specialist to students who have needs that cannot be adequately addressed in other physical Education programs. In addition to Adapted Physical Education, other service delivery options include Adapted Physical Education collaboration and Adapted Physical Education consultation, specially designed physical education, modified physical education, and general physical education. Provision of Adapted Physical Education is based on the same process of referral, assessment, and individual program planning that other special education services follow. An assessment and evaluation of motor skills performance is considered by the Individualized Education Program team in determining provision of service. The individualized plan is developed through an assessment process that may include test administration, observation, record review, diagnostic teaching, and collection of information from other service providers, the student, and his/her family. Adapted Physical Education is an instructional program within the spectrum of physical education options taught by a credentialed Adapted Physical Education Specialist. The Adapted Physical Education Specialist provides curriculum-based and prescriptive instruction for individuals identified as eligible for services. Each specialist works within a comprehensive service delivery model which complies with legal mandates for educational service for individuals with disabilities. In addition, services may be supplemented through the collaborative model with a variety of team members (such as teachers, language speech specialists, psychologists, parents, occupational therapists and physical therapists, medical personnel, and others) to provide an integrated and consistent program for individuals with disabilities. The physical education curriculum includes, but is not limited to, basic locomotor patterns and skills, object control skills, rhythms and dance, aquatics, physical and motor fitness, and games. The unique and specific needs of individuals with disabilities may require accommodations and adaptive techniques or strategies to provide effective instruction in developmentally appropriate skills, functional skills, and age appropriate skills within the least restrictive environment. Instruction in Adapted Physical Education provides the foundation for learning and performing psychomotor skills, so that individuals with disabilities can more fully, safely, and with satisfaction participate in movement programs, recreation, sport, and physical fitness activities. The Adapted Physical Education Specialist teaches in all domains of learning with an emphasis on the psychomotor area. Instruction is provided in communication, cognition, social, behavioral, perceptual, and daily living domains, in addition to physical and motor skills. Student preferences and interests are considered in program planning, as well as coordination of services and resources.

The use of hypnosis in sports counseling and athletic training is modestly represented in the literature. However, almost all of the existing literature on sports hypnosis focuses on hypnosis for performance enhancement or aspects related to performance enhancement, such as concentration and stress reduction (Braybrooke, 1988; Collins, Doherty, Talbot, 1993; Heyman, 1987; Krenz, 1984; Liggett, 2000; Morgan, 1993; Robazza Bortoli, 1995; Stanton, 1994; Tafti, Besset, Billiard, 1992; Wojcikiewicz Orlick, 1987). This article will examine themes reflected in the literature on sports hypnosis and will explore uses of Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy (HCH) with athletes as demonstrated through case examples. Several authors provide general overviews of the uses of hypnosis in sports (Liggett, 2000; Morgan, 1993; Taylor, Horevitz, Balague, 1993). However, the majority of available literature on sports hypnosis focuses on using hypnosis for performance enhancement. In addition, many of the articles that do not focus on performance enhancement per se, describe characteristics which have a direct effect on performance. For example, this literature review found that the second most common use for hypnosis in sports was anxiety or stress reduction (Howard Reardon, 1986; Krenz, 1984; Naruse, 1965; Onestak, 1991; Wojcikiewicz Orlick, 1987). Another common theme in sports hypnosis literature (also connected to performance enhancement) is the relationship of hypnosis to mental and psychological training (Krenz, 1984; Onestak, 1991). In addition, hypnosis has been used for other aspects of performance enhancement, including strength and physical and emotional control (Diamante Baker, 1991; Howard Reardon, 1986; Johnson Kramer, 1961; Liggett Hamada, 1993; Scott, 1984), concentration (Collins, Doherty, Talbot, 1993; Schreiber, 1991), self-concept (Howard Reardon, 1986), motivation (Baybrooke, 1988; Darden, 1972; Pearson, 1983), and mood enhancement (Oakley, Norell, Cripps, 1995). Hypnosis has also been used to achieve optimal levels of performance arousal, which are necessary for the individual to achieve peak performance (Garver, 1977; Liggett, 2000; McMaster, 1993). Sports hypnosis has been further investigated in the literature in order to better understand the relationships among trance states, performance, pain, and healing. Researchers have examined occurrences of trance states in athletes and the effects of these states on performance and health (Callen, 1983; Cancio, 1991; Grove Lewis, 1996; Masters, 1992). Finally, in sports medicine, hypnosis has been utilized to decrease pain and increase healing (Ballinger, 1987; Kroger, 1988). Although performance is a primary concern for athletes, a variety of other issues exist which affect the mental health and functioning of athletes. Various developmental issues impact athletes, including identity issues, personal competence, and career planning (Jordan Denson, 1990; Pearson Petipas, 1990; Wooten, 1994). Athletes must also confront identity issues related to their level of participation and achievement in sports (Greendorfor Blinde, 1985; Ogilivie Howe, 1982; Svoboda Vanek, 1982). For athletes who focus solely on sports activities, self-esteem, identity, and social affiliation may be entirely dependent upon their athletic involvement (Gordett, 1985; Pearson Petipas, 1990). Once participation in athletics ceases (either voluntarily or involuntarily), the individual may experience crises related to identity, self-efficacy, and helplessness (Kleiber Brock, 1992). Athletes transitioning out of sports often must deal with rebuilding identity in a non-athletic context, constructing career-life plans, and developing personal competencies (Wooten Hinkle, 1991). These examples demonstrate the broad spectrum of developmental and identity issues that exist in the world of the athlete. However, the use of hypnosis in dealing with athletes developmental and identity issues has been conspicuously absent from the existing literature. Almost all descriptions of hypnosis in sports counseling are fundamentally connected to performance enhancement.

DOORS WINDOWS A double swing door has recently been fire tested for the market. Fire door specialist Omega Doors has fire tested a large double swing door it intends to market to hospitals. A unit from the Ultima fire door range was tested, in conjunction with door controls made by Dorma, to BS476, part 22, at Warrington Fire Research Centre (WFRC). It achieved a 240 minute rating using a Dorma BTS75V floor spring, says Omega. The company says that the door has been acclaimed as one of the first double swing doors in the UK to achieve a four hour rating.

The manager of the rental car agency was asked if they should return to the dealership to obtain the drivers licenses, but the manager told the employee to go ahead and complete the rental agreement.In April, 1991, the plaintiff, Drinkall, an Iowa resident, was injured in an accident in Iowa involving a car driven by Bayles. Because Bayles and Used Car were residents of Nebraska and Drinkall was an Iowa resident, the case was heard in federal court under “diversity of citizenship” jurisdiction.The case was tried in the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. The jury found the rental car company liable. The trial court had instructed the jury that in order to find Used Car liable it had to find that Used Car had consented to Bayles use of the vehicle at the time of the accident. Iowa law provides that, where damage is done by any motor vehicle by reason of its negligence of the driver and the auto is driven with the consent of the owner, the owner of the motor vehicle shall be liable for such damage.On appeal, defendant Used Car argued that the district court should not have used Iowa law but rather Nebraska law, which does not provide for owner liability. The appellate court found that the district court was correct in using Iowa law. In conflicts of law situations, the federal court is to use the conflicts of law that is prevailing in the state in which it sits. Iowa uses the significant relationships test, a theory that the court should use the law of the state which has the most significant relationships to the matter and parties involved in the litigation.
Two-thirds of surveyed car rental operators
say theyre optimistic about their business outlook for the next two
quarters, according to results from Abrams Travel Data Services (ATD) just
released Car Rental Operator Benchmark Survey. This optimistic outlook is
one of several signs that the US car rental industry may be poised for a
strong year. These benchmark survey results, along with a 2004 forecast for
the US and European car rental industries, are part of the February edition
of Car Rental Market Scan, ATDs subscriber quarterly information service
tracking the auto rental industry.
ATD surveyed car rental operators geographically dispersed throughout the
US and that serve all segments of the industry including airport-based
rentals and non-airport/local markets. Car rental operators reported their
performance for the 4th quarter of 2003 in a variety of statistical
indicators including revenue per transaction, daily dollar average, average
length of rental, no-show percentage, profit
margin, and changes in
indicators compared to a year ago. The Car Rental Operator Benchmark Survey
will be conducted each quarter and the results presented in each upcoming

Swedish hotel property company Home Properties AB (OMX Stockholm: HOPR) said on Friday (9 May) that it has agreed to acquire two properties adjacent to its hotel property Clarion Hotel Wisby in Visby, Sweden. Home Properties is acquiring the properties, comprising a total of 3,300 square metres, from GE Real Estate AB in a SEK33m deal. American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) The largest American burying beetle reintroduction effort in the 12-year history of the species recovery program took place recently on Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts coast. The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, raised well over 300 of the endangered beetles for release on Nantucket Island, a historic locality for the species. On June 11 and 12,320 American burying beetles (160 pairs) were given dead quail for food (the beetles require carrion to reproduce) and released at the Massachusetts Audubon Societys Sesachacha Wildlife Sanctuary. With each pair of beetles capable of raising 10-20 larvae, the 2001 release may result in thousands of beetles on the island by late fall. This effort is probably one of the largest reintroductions ever undertaken for an endangered insect species. Present to document the work was a film crew from the TV program, Wild Moments, and the Providence Journal newspaper. Partners in the work include the Rhode Island Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Massachusetts Audubon Society, University of Massachusetts Boston Field Station, University of Rhode Island, Maria Mitchell Natural History Museum, and Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) As a result of a multi-agency partnership, endangered Indiana bats have been documented to migrate to the Lake Champlain Valley in Vermont from a hibernaculure in New York. Biologists tagged five Indiana bats (four females and one male) with radio transmitters as the bats left their hibernaculum (hibernation site) in early May. Three females were located by air and subsequently by land in Vermont within one to six days after release. Multiple roost trees for two of the females were identified; most of the roost trees were shagbark hickories. Evening counts of bats leaving the roosts ranged from 4 to 120 bats (probably more than one species roosted together). All of the Indiana bats were found on private land and all landowners granted permission for field staff to locate the bats. The success of this study was due to a substantial cooperative effort by state and federal agencies and concerned citizens. Staff and equipment were provided by our New England and New York Field Offices, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (which also provided the airplane and pilot), the Green and White Mountain national forests, and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources loaned additional equipment. High school and college students also volunteered their time.

Unfortunately last weekends weather forecast gave a bad report for boat fishing and consequently a lot of charter skippers cancelled the parties they had booked. Once again the weather forecasters got it wrong so charter skippers, tackle shop owners and anglers lost money and sport. There were one or two private boats out ( one was the Blue Bell II out of Amble, with Tony Urwin and his wife. Fishing just outside the harbour they had over 30 cod between 3-5lb. Private boats out of Seaham also managed to get out and, again fishing just off the harbour, they took cod to 6lb. On the subject of boats, two more charter vessels for you.

Catherine Matheson [*] NAVAJO FAMILIES WHO HAVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES In the United States, many have come to believe that families and family involvement are the most important factors in supporting children with disabilities. Families exist within an ecocultural environment that is complex and powerful, and it is within the family context that development in all its forms begins and is nurtured. We cannot understand what family involvement means without understanding the culture of families and the informal systems that families use to adapt and operate. In this chapter, the example of Navajo families with children with disabilities underscores and shows in high relief the heavy reliance on cultural support for families that is part of any family system. As early-intervention and family support programs continue to grow in the United States, we need to understand and sustain those benefits of indigenous systems that provide support and relief to families even as we seek to engage families in the use of supports that may be offered by private and public agencies. Two complementary systems operate to fulfill the needs of Navajo and other American families who have children with disabilities: one is the indigenous adaptive system and the other is the public health system that has been established nationally in the United States with local options. One example is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 1997), parts B and C, providing early intervention, preschool, and school-age services. The indigenous system was in existence long before the IDEA, but has not been recognized as such. Both systems attempt to increase the well-being of families, but because all adaptive systems have a cost, neither system is totally benign. Each system extracts some payment for the benefits it provides. When discussing costs, our intent is not so much to point out financial costs, which are often involved, but to show that costs to families can be more subtle, such as the erosion of family responsibility and satisfaction with the efforts the family makes on behalf of the child with a disability. Thus, in the Navajo sample, families identified medical disabilities and sought help for medical problems from professionals but were sometimes unable to resolve their anxiety until they involved spiritual services or indigenous healing practices. Conversely, Navajo families did not identify learning disorders in the preschool age group that we interviewed. Learning and language disabilities were primarily identified by professionals and schools, who in turn sometimes found families apprehensive and reluctant to adopt an active role in early-intervention efforts that they had not sought themselves.
